We are leaving to discover the meaning of the term "Sustainable Development" in the most remote places of the planet. We envisage this discovery to be helped through the creation of a dialogue between these remote place and Western Europe, a dialogue about Sustainable Development. Therefore, for us to expect propositions of Sustainable Development from others, we to propose solutions that come from us and Western Europe. This is why we wish to share a solution that is of importance to us personally, as citizens of Europe.
This solution is the increase of Bicycle usage as a mode for urban transport within urban development plans. 360ways has formed a partnership with the Dutch organisation: Vélo Mondial. This collaboration is foremost a serious one which has fixed itself tangible objectives towards which we will be working to together during the 2 year voyage. As you will be able to read in the Magazine page, Vélo Mondial exists in order to contribute towards the promotion of bicycle usage, and has created "Vélo Info", an experts database aiming at assisting public authorities in implementing Bicycle usage in their planning strategy for urbanisation.
It is therefore with Velo Mondial, an indispensible partner for us to provide solid background to a Sustainable Development solution, that we are going to promote the benefits of Bicycle usage in the 250 cities of our itinerary. With the help and support of Velo Mondial, we will play the role of ambassadors of the Bicycle, and we will meet the local public authorities t bring constructive dialogue about the advantages brought to urbanisation plans by the usage of the Bicycle. Amongst the advantages that we will be promoting in the cities around the world, there are:
In this way we hope to learn more on how these cities see what we consider to positive outcomes from a Sustainable Solution that can be implemented locally very easily. If the public authorities consider that there can be a positive outcome, or an advantage, or even a pleasure from the inclusion of the Bicycle within development plans, then we'll be sure, that they will be willing to sign Velo Mondial's Charter:" Action Plan for Bicycle Friendly Communities". As we progress on our trip, we hope to attract as many Mayors as possible that have signed the Charter, to the World Bicycle Conference 2006 that will be held in South Africa. |
